My 5 year old boston terrier we just got from the pound HATES my 1 year old rat terrier. How do i get them to be friends and what is the estimated time it would take??

when the dogs are playing she doesn't seem to do this... but when my yorkie is resting she will run up and grab him by his throat.. I am afraid she is going to kill him.. Is this common and what can I do about it?
